Approximately fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he posted on a platform, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
