Guitar Hero at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That United the Gap Between Rock Fans

It has been two decades since Guitar Hero debuted across the Atlantic, giving players everywhere the tools to feel like a rock star. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that anyone who has mastered the epic four-minute guitar solo before a packed living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, Guitar Hero provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match coloured notes scrolling down the display synchronized to the music. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, creating the feel of an authentic performance.

Harmonix previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable franchise that had a significant impact on numerous musicians featured, introducing classic groups to millions of younger players.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, remembers the initial financial challenges of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Even with the publishing rights alone, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero took off, and record sales and radio play were going up, everyone wanted to be in.”

He adds: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the music they loved. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls how the series revived classic rock to the forefront: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, new demographic. Generally such music was considered music that was past it, however once it got featured on the title and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised it, and got rid of the outdated tag. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record was still unreleased stateside, so the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew had on the song during travel, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Titles Enduring Influence

Rock’s biggest acts quickly took advantage of the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and associated lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the group more money compared to their studio albums. It sold more than 500,000 units upon release, and sales of their songs rose significantly during an era as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Earlier this year, a streamer completed an impressive attempt featuring Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of personalization features. The song is difficult enough on the hardest setting, let alone performed at increased tempo and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated it took nine months of practice.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you should pick up actual weapons and go to war,” says musician Herman Li.

The band had already completed a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames was featured on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it made them a household name. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it has risked eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the song featured in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I felt otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “Should you just hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – everyone’s got a unique path in music and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact of a Plastic Guitar

The best promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what we were aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon on the stage. From day one, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs such as DJ Hero, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games like the fan project and newer releases have kept the scene alive, and there’s set to be something from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought such titles might become like Madden allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “With abundant new music it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist for future fans.”
