Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
