Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
